Clearview Gardens
Early in the season, it was uncertain whether a garden would be possible due to a spring tornado, but a contracted cleanup crew was able to remove debris and make the area safe for residents. Because of the delay, planting did not begin until mid‑June, and plants were purchased rather than started from seed.
Each week, 2 to 6 residents took part in garden activities, supported by 2–3 staff members. Some residents participated from wheelchairs and contributed by observing, helping carry vegetables, or assisting with simple tasks. To increase involvement, watering cans were purchased so residents could help with watering. Additional trellises were also added to encourage vertical growth and make harvesting easier.
Clearview held two indoor “farmer’s markets” this year. These events allowed residents to share the produce they helped grow, raise funds for activities, and gain experience in a market‑style setting. Staff hope to expand the market next year by adding flowers grown on‑site.
Plans for 2026 include building a raised bed to improve accessibility for residents with mobility challenges. This addition will allow more individuals to participate directly in planting, tending, and harvesting.
Despite the late start and challenges from storm damage, the 2025 garden season was successful and enjoyable for everyone involved. The garden provided meaningful activities, fresh produce, and a sense of accomplishment for residents and staff alike.
